Xingyiquan

Children, Animals and Chinese Martial Arts

It's often written in Tai Chi books that we should attempt to mimic the natural movements of small children. The Tao Te Ching frequently admonishes us that to become a great sage we must become more like children, chapter 55, for example:

"He who is in harmony with the Tao
is like a newborn child.
Its bones are soft, its muscles are weak,
but its grip is powerful."

On XingYi Dragon (Lung Xing)

Most people know XingYi Dragon (Long Xing) as the move where you rise up and drop down in a crossed legged low Pi Chuan posture. A lot of schools seem to use it as a warm up because it's incredibly cardiovascular if done repeatedly, although the jury is still out on whether this is any good for your knees - probably not!

Here's an example of a typical XingYi Dragon performance.

Improving your form

Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold:
Then felt I like some watcher of the skies
When a new planet swims into his ken;

The XingYi Classics

When it comes to people quoting the "XingYi Classics", the Yue Fei Quani Pu doesn't get much attention these days, which I think is a shame, because it's not only  full of really insightful information for anybody who practices the art of XingYi, or any of the internal martial arts for that matter, but it's the document that all the more modern XingYi "classics" are culled from.
